Venous Insufficiency is the disease process in which lower extremity veins are large causing the valves in them to be incompetent (not working).
In turn, it causes some reverse flow of blood towards the feet and its pooling in the lower extremities. This affects the surrounding soft tissues and skin in the lower extremities.
Patients typically complain of leg discomfort, swelling, skin discoloration among other things. In severe cases, patients develop non-healing skin ulcers in legs above ankle area.
Laser vein ablation (EVLT) is the preferred treatment.
